In the established neighbourhood of Gilmore, the Pop Top House transforms a modest 1980s single-storey dwelling into a light-filled family home. Originally built with strong solar passive principles, the home featured north-facing living areas, exposed timber beams, and a flat metal roof that defined its character.

The alterations and additions build upon these qualities, introducing subtle yet impactful changes that elevate the everyday experience of the house. A new living room extension projects north, enhancing the connection to the garden and drawing in improved northern light throughout the day. At the heart of the home, a roof pop-up above the kitchen brings in a generous wash of northern sunlight, improving both the liveliness and functionality of the open plan living spaces.

Externally, a new detached double garage with storage, paired with a freestanding pergola and outdoor entertaining area, provides practical amenity while making the most of the northerly aspect and mountain views. Internally, the renovation focused on improving flow and comfort with a reconfigured kitchen, new flooring, lighting, and a fresh material palette.

Energy efficiency played a key role in the design. Upgrades include double-glazed uPVC windows, new insulation to walls and ceilings, and improved thermal performance throughout, ensuring the home remains comfortable year-round while significantly reducing energy demand.

The result is a revitalised family home that celebrates natural light, strengthens the connection to its setting, and ensures longevity through sustainable upgrades – a contemporary reimagining that retains the spirit of the original.
