Located in the heart of O’Connor, this revitalised Tocumwal home brings together heritage character and contemporary sustainability. The renovation carefully reimagines the original dwelling while introducing a modern rear addition that enhances both comfort and functionality.

The existing Tocumwal was restored with respect for its history, including new external cladding that replicates the home’s original detailing. Alongside this, extensive thermal upgrades have lifted the building’s performance to meet today’s standards of energy efficiency. A discreet link now connects the original cottage to the new extension, seamlessly blending old and new.

The addition accommodates a new kitchen, dining, and living space, complete with a study nook. Solar passive design principles shape the extension, with raked ceilings, polished concrete floors, and a waffle pod slab working together to harness natural light, store thermal energy, and reduce material use. Sustainability guided every decision, from the use of uPVC double-glazed windows to high-performance insulation and strategic orientation, all contributing to year-round efficiency and comfort.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can honour the past while embracing the future, breathing new life into an iconic Tocumwal home and setting a benchmark for sustainable residential design in Canberra.
